Styling Your Family Session

I am asked often what families should be wearing to their session so their photos capture them well on camera without being too matchy-matchy. I have a few tips, color schemes and ideas for you in styling your family for their session with me.

You can choose truly any style or color scheme your heart desires, but a few things to consider are your location, what you currently have at home, colors that look good on everyone in the photos.

Blue, White, Tan

This color combination is classic, easy and works for every season! Most likely, you already have these colors in your wardrobe so it won’t be a crazy expense to style your family session. Pulling different textures within these colors also creates a very balanced look without feeling so matchy!

Red, Black, Cream

This color scheme is lovely for the fall! Or even holidays. Throwing in patterns can sometimes be distracting, so keep them minimal. Play with styles that reflect your personal family style.

Reds & Creams

Adding shades of red can be tricky depending no your skin tone, but balancing it out with cream tones and opposing, non-distracting patterns is a great option!

Blues!

Playing with a variety of blues is a great and easy way to add dimension to your photos without worrying if the color scheme you’ve chosen works for you. Adding in non-distracting patterns, textures like denim, linen, and colors light blue, dark blue, navy. Monotone while adding dimension!

Neutrals!

You can’t go wrong with neutrals. Break up a monochromatic look by paring neutrals together. Like black and white to provide contrast. When in doubt, neutrals are always a great idea!

Other Color Palette Options

A muted nature color palette is great for the summer. Think by the lake or beachside!

A pastel palette is great for a spring session, indoor or outdoor. Think about the perfect Easter colors!

A soft palette is great for the summertime. Peaches, pinks and light blues compliment each other wonderfully!

A pink color palette is great for anytime of the year, but especially for the winter time with a family full of girls!

Most likely, you’ll have something in your closet that has shades of these colors. Making an easy go-to scheme to fit any season.

This color palette is great for families that love going bold. These colors pair really nicely with bolder accessories!

A rich color palette is great for the fall. These colors pair really nicely with the fall leaves and compliment each other perfectly!

A cream color palette is great for any time of year, but amazing for a summer, beachside session. Great for when you don’t want to worry about whether or not your colors work together.
